The International Society for Technology In Education known as ITSE has produced standards for teachers, administrators, and students. The standards for educators address the need for teachers to utilize teaching skills in both the traditional and online classroom environments. The standards prompt educators to develop authentic learning experiences while proving assessments that are varied yet aligned to the content curriculum. Ideally, educators will collaborate with all the stakeholders in the community they teach, including parents, students, administrators, and other instructors as well.

While many standards were written with technology use in education, ITSE recognizes that not all school districts are able to provide the robust tools and connections for full integration of online resources. So it is important for teachers to be the model for the world wide learning environment, and to continue to encourage students to use online tools judiciously and to adapt to standards created to foster life long learning. Educators should not just implement lessons based on some fantastic new tool without careful thought to its usefulness for classroom learning.

The ITSE community has also developed new, 2016 standards for students. It is important to study these standards while we learn how to use online tools for e learning. The new ITSE standards for students can also serve as a guide for educators to choose the kind of tools that would make the learning experience one that is dynamic and authentic. We study the standards in an effort to motivate students to become responsible team players with clear communication skills. We need to ask ourselves: will this new tool help students become ethical digital citizens?

ITSE 2016 Student Standards

There are many resources for educators at the ITSE site. One of these resources is an open forum for discussion of the ITSE

standards. These are networking groups that share information on such varied topics as digital storytelling, computing teachers, and digital equity group to name a few. One networking group is called the Innovative Learning Technologies Network. There are over 200 discussions and nearly 4,000 members. This group is made up of teachers, educational researchers, technology innovators, and educational leaders. They organize information and help to inform teachers of new technologies that could help students meet the ITSE standards in blended and online environments.
